Crochet FAQ

Since y'all are dying to know

  • Q: Do you use a pattern?

  • A: Nope, I can't read patterns and they turn into static in my brain when I try. I watch video tutorials for the basics and then work the rest out myself, or I look at how something is made and feel it out. It's a lot of trial and error but until someone finds a dycalculia accessible way to format patterns it'll have to do and I don't mind it.

  • Q:How did you make the sunflower cardigan?

  • A: I made a post detailing the best I could about the construction of the cardigan here

  • Q: Can I buy/commission something?

  • A: 1. If I dont specify that an item is for sale then no. I will be opening a store page soon where I will sell stuff I make, but it will be limited stock since I do this as a hobby and not as a job.

  • 2. As for commission, crochet is very time consuming and cannot be replicated by machine so everything has to be handmade. If I ever take commissions I will put up a post, but I need inquiries to be from serious buyers only. Garments like my sunflower cardigan would be priced around $900-$1200 depending on the yarn and how long it takes to make. This is calculated by material price and Denver minimum hourly wage. It takes a long time to make so I will only sell to those who can respect that.

  • Q:What yarn do you use?

  • A: I like to use the twist and loops acrylic from Jo-Ann's, that is what the sunflower cardigan is made of. I've been toying with other natural fiber yarns lately to try and be more sustainable with my crafts but money is a limiting factor.

  • Q:What hooks do you use/recommend?

  • A: I use aluminum ergonomic tapered hooks that have rubber handles for improved grip. One of them is Suzan Bates, but the rest I bought in a set online that had no branding.

  • I recommend using ergonomic hooks to reduce the risk of carpal tunnel or fatigue, though you can make ergonomic handles for the hooks you have pretty easily using beauty blenders, tennis balls or even polymer clay.

  • Q: How long have you been crocheting?

  • A: I've been crocheting for 10 years now, my high school English teacher taught me to crochet when she noticed I had a really hard time focusing if I didn't have something to do with my hands. I highly recommend doing it too since it has a low barrier entry for cost and there are plenty of free beginner friendly tutorials available online.
